Wednesday, March 11 Innovative had again donated money worth $11,000 to the Boys andGirls Clubs of the Virgin Islands to support the young’s future and development.

The event happened at Christiansted Club on Market Street where Jennifer Matarangas-King, Innovative vice president of public relations, represented O’Neil Canton, club executive director, and other board members and handed the gift that will be used for the refurbishments of the organization’s establishments.

Canton said that the funds are for the enhancements of facilities in Christiansted and Frederiksted to meet the standards of a healthy and safe environment, as well as for the improvement of the establishment’s service and ambiance.

One of the areas that need repair is the back gate of the Christiansted facility that was wrecked due to the hurricane Hugo. The wooden gate was rebuilt in 1989 and had started to crumble due to old age. The concerned group has already hired someone who will fix it as soon as possible.

“The plumbing is also shot,” Canton said. “The cast iron pipes have holes and the bathrooms are in bad shape.”

The club’s building is noticeably old since it was built in the late 1950’s. The establishment has been occupied since 1978, which now has several weak spots such as the stage and power boxes that needs to be protected. The rooms and walls need refurbishment as well.

The roofs also need to be replaced or repaired due to leaks as well as the basketball court that needs resurfacing.

Matarangas-King said the Boys and Girls Clubs have proved their consistency and reliability in their programs.

“We’ve had a long relationship with the Boys and Girls Clubs. We know the value of the clubs and we’re very pleased with their history of proven programs,” Matarangas-King said.

Shaniece Charlemagne, president of the Boys and Girls Club board of directors, said that they are truly grateful for all the help that come. She also mentioned that they received funding from the government and it has a 21st Century Grant from the Department of Education.

“Donations are extremely important for the clubs at this time, with budget shortfalls and cuts,” Charlemagne said. “It’s important for local business and corporations to donate.”

May Adams Cornwall, chairwoman of the board’s Resource Development Committee, said they hope that more help and donation would still arrive, which would greatly add help to the organization.

Canton said that generous concerned people could donate materials and manpower if they can’t afford to donate money. Those interested could reach Canton at 1-340-778-8990 to find out more about donating.
