On Sunday, March 15, the Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF) of Haiti will host a fundraising event entitled a ‘Coffee Morning with Cinnamon Rolls in the Rainforest’ that will begin at 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

GSF will be collecting donations of money and supplies beneficial for the two primary schools in Haiti, the Ile a Vache School at La Hatte and the Imect School.

Artist Mandy Thody, who lives near Frederiksted manages the proceeds of the fundraising event that will all go for the improvement of the schools.

Tortola Rotary with GSF built the Ile a Vache School at La Hatte that has been running for four years. 150 children from this poor offshore island are now attending this school. GSF also hosts medical and dental clinics at Ile a Vache as well as the new expansion programs such as micro-lending system and technical training classes for all ages.

Imect School started in 2001 but was destroyed in a Haitian earthquake. When Thody and Virgin Islands friends started the rebuilding of the school, 100 children attended just under a tarpaulin. Gradually, the school has been successfully rebuilt that is now with three kindergarten classes and six grades. Currently, 230 children are enrolled at Imect School. In fact, it has been achieving a very high 95% passing rate.

Through the efforts of GSF, Tortola friends and other generous supporters, both of the schools manages to serve rice and beans or maize for lunch, which are the children’s main dish of the day. However, laptop computers are still needed for administration and communications. GSF also still seeks for more sewing machines, electric or manual, and hand or power tools for communal workshops.

This Sunday at the fundraising event, the $10 for coffee and a giant cinnamon roll baked fresh by Mandy’s daughter, Merryn, in her Nidulari Bakery with wood-fired brick oven on site, will be donated to the organization.

Haitian and local crafts, artwork including raku tile by Mandy are as well for sale at the event.
